I need someone who has expertise to give me advice about the hardware and routing in my house. It was set up a long time ago by someone else and I don't understand where everything is going or why. Too many wires, 2 routers, 1 wifi, 2 computers, 1 upc modem on ground floor, printer on 4th floor with desktop and the other computer is a laptop i use off of wifi. Everything was fine for years and now i think one of the routers, netgear, is the problem. I want to get rid of both netgear boxes and use 2 wifis, one on ground floor next to modem and one upstairs for the desktop on 4th etage. BUT i'm not sure if i am going to create a problem disconnecting wires,,, and would like someone to help me. I think someone needs to see this.
What you can do is buy 2 routers or 1 router + accespoint.
1 router kan be next to the UPC modem downstairs, and the other router you can place on the 4th floor.
1th router downstairs, you can easily configure it.
Most broadband routers are plug and play, the 2nd router needs to be configured but is fairly easy to do.
the second option is router + accespoint.
1th router you can place downstairs.
The accespoint can be placed at the 4th floor, only thing you need is a networkcable from the router downstairs to the accespoint on the 4th floor.
with option 1, downstairs 3 ports + wifi on the 4th floor wifi + 3 or 4 ports
With option 2 you only have 3 ports downstairs + wifi and on the 4th floor you only have wifi
For both options you need 1 networkcable from downstairs to the 4th floor.
Costs are about 100-150 euro (hardware)
** I recommend option 1 because you have more options, option 2 is easier to implement if you're knowledge with networking is limited.

Thank you for repying ! I bought an apple WiFi express for 89 euros and connected it to the UPC modem on the ground floor. Disconnected all the other netgear routers. and called apple help desk to talk me through the configuration on my computer. It worked with one glitch that we had to over ride, and now i have 4 floors of wifi from the ground floor access to the top floor desk top computer !
